    在医学临床中,凡影响通过视听途径的基本言语交际过程的病态现象属言语障碍;而影响造句表意或理解他人言语含意等较高级过程的病态现象则为语言障碍。言语障碍可由视、听、发音、书写器官的器质性病变造成,也可以是发育性的言语障碍,如口吃和发不出某些辅音等等。语言障碍常见于发育期,如儿童学语迟缓。也见于某些精神障碍,如大脑受损造成失语症时语言和言语均有明显障碍。语言能力是智力表现的一个重要组成部分,所以在智力落后或智力发育不全、谵妄、痴呆等情况下都见有语言障碍。
