铁路车站内办理列车各种作业的场所，是铁路车站的重要组成部分。各类车场由办理同一种作业的站线联结而成，按作业内容一般可分为：①到达场，办理列车到达作业。②出发场,办理列车出发作业。③到发场,兼办列车到达和出发作业。④通过车场，办理通过货物列车的到达和出发作业。⑤编组场，也称调车场，办理货物列车的解体、集结和编组作业。⑥编发场，兼办货物列车的解体、集结、编组和出发作业。⑦地区车场，供地区到发的货车分类和存放用。⑧交换车场，供铁路与工矿企业专用铁道的或上下行调车作业系统的交换车停留用。⑨客车整备场，供办理客车整备作业用。车场线路的联结形式有梯形、异腰梯形、平行四边形、梭形等（见图）。车场线路的联结形式同车场用途、地形条件等因素有关，如到达场线路一般采用梭形联结形式；平面调车场一般采用梯形联结形式等。
