植物名称有其发表的优先律（priority）。凡符合“法规”的最早发表的名称，为唯一的正确名称。种子植物的种加词（种名）优先律的起点为1753年5月1日，即以林奈1753年出版的《植物种志》（Species plantarum ed. 1）为起点；属名的起点为1754及1764年林奈所著的《植物属志》（Genera plantarum）的第5版与第6版开始。因此，1种植物如已有2个或2个以上的学名，应以最早发表的名称为合用名称。例如，银线草有3个学名，先后分别被发表过3次：
