蜡缬 又称臈缬、蜡染。《贵州通志》“用蜡绘画于布而染之,既去蜡,则花纹如绘。”用蜡在织物上画出图案,然后入染,最后沸煮去蜡,则成为色底白花的印染品。由于蜡凝结收缩或加以揉搓,产生许多裂纹,染料渗入裂缝,成品花纹往往产生一丝丝不规则纹理,形成一种独特的装饰效果。蜡缬有单色染和复色染两种。复色染有套色到四五色的,色彩自然而丰富。唐张萱《捣练图》中有几个妇女的衣裙就是蜡染工艺制成的。蜡染实为现代纺织品加工一种“防染法”。
