为菊科植物向日葵的根，植物形态详"向日葵子"条。
【化学成分】
根中能合成促进植物细胞分裂的动力精，运至各部分；在叶和茎汁中都含动力精，其性质同玉蜀黍嘌呤。
【性味】
《四川中药志》："性温，味甘，无毒。"
【功用主治】
治胸胁胃脘作痛，二便不通，跌打损伤。 ①《岭南采药录》："治跌打损伤，红肿。" ②《四川中药志》："治胃胀胸痛，胁肋滞痛，润肠通便。" ③《泉州本草》："治消渴引饮，疳疮流黄水。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，鲜者0.5～1两；或研末。外用：捣敷。
【选方】
①治胃脘滞痛：向日葵根、芫荽子、小茴香。煎汤服。(《四川中药志》) ②治二便不通：向日葵鲜根捣绞汁，调蜜服，每次五钱至一两。(《泉州本草》) ③治淋病阴茎涩痛：鲜向日葵根一两。水煎数沸(不要久煎)服。(江西《草药手册》) ④治疝气：鲜葵花根一两。和红糖煎水服。(江西《草药手册》)
