细菌在菌体内形成的一个圆形或卵圆形的小体。有成套的核质、酶和合成菌体成分的机构，能保存细菌的全部生命活性。产生芽胞的细菌都是革兰阳性菌。芽胞呈现圆形或卵圆形，折光性强，壁厚，不易着色。芽胞一般只在动物体外才能形成，成熟后菌体成为空壳，以后菌体自溶，将芽胞放出，游离于外界环境中。在适宜条件下，又可发芽，形成新的菌体。一个细菌只能形成一个芽胞，一个芽胞也只能生成一个菌体。一般认为芽胞是细菌的休眠状态，其代谢相对静息，抵抗力强，在自然界中可存活多年，成为某些传染病的重要来源。在进行消毒灭菌时，判定灭菌是否彻底，应以芽胞是否被杀死作为标准。
