在阿里山主峰的神木车站东侧，耸立着一棵高凌云霄的大树，树身略倾侧，主干已折断，但树梢的分枝却苍翠碧绿，树高52米左右 枝却苍翠碧绿，树高52米左右，树围约23米，需十几人才能合抱。约生于周公摄政时代，故被称为“周公桧”，据推算它已有3000多年高龄，是亚洲树王，仅次于美洲的巨树“世界爷”。
一九五六年秋，树身曾遭雷击，现在上端所植之二代木，为一九六二年栽种。但遗憾的是，一九九七年七月一日，因大雨而有半边倒塌。
在周公桧的东南方有一棵奇异有趣的“三代木”。三代木同一根株，能枯而后荣，重复长出祖孙三代的树木，是造化的神奇安排。横倒于地的第一代枯干，树龄已逾千年，矗立的第二代只剩空壳残根，高一丈的第三代则枝繁茂盛。
