The Internet Society of China says there were 3.51 million websites were registered in China, by the end of 2013. The figures, which were published in a report, show China’s huge internet explosion, since the country’s first website was launched two decades ago. 4.61 million domain names are currently owned and operated by over 2.8 million users. 70 percent of those users are organizations, while 30 percent are individuals. Over 16 thousand websites operate within the education, healthcare and media sectors. China’s first globally connected website was built by researchers at the Institute of High Energy Physics, under the Chinese Academy of Science in 1994. The site included high-tech articles, and a column, called "Tour in China" which introduced China’s culture, news and economy to the world.
