BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Final round World Cup qualifying matches for South America and Europe have ended with England, Spain, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Russia, Chile and Ecuador winning a ticket to next year’s final in Brazil.
Bosnia and Herzegovina reached their first major tournament as an independent nation after a goal from Vedad Ibisevic gave them a 1-0 win over Lithuania on Tuesday. The former Yugoslav republic finished top of Group G, ahead of Greece on goal difference.
Thrilled Bosnians poured onto the streets after the match, celebrating with fireworks, dancing and cheering in the capital and other cities in the country.
For many Bosnians, football success has been a rare cause for celebration since the country descended into nearly four years of war two decades ago.
