BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- At least four people have been killed and 172 unaccounted for in the US state of Colorado’s worst floods in decades. Rescue workers have been battling to reach stranded residents.
The state Governor has declared a disaster emergency for 14 counties. Boulder County Sheriff says he expects the number of deaths to be significantly less than 172.
The flooding began overnight Wednesday, when half the rain usually seen in a year soaked Colorado’s biggest urban centers, from Fort Collins near the Wyoming border south through Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs. Flash floods toppled buildings, washed out roads and inundated farmland.
Thousands have been evacuated. Search and rescue teams have used boats and helicopters, but officials say there were many areas they couldn’t reach. Still more rain was expected Saturday.
