BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- A senior official of Syria’s main armed opposition group, the Free Syrian Army, has dismissed the Geneva agreement. He’s called it an "initiative designed to gain time for the Syrian government".
General Salim Idris, Supreme Military Council Chief, said, "Between Mr John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov in Geneva we hear today some news that the international community will start destroying the chemical weapons in Syria next year. And I would like to remind the international community, to remind our friends in the world, that the Syrian people are suffering since more than two and half years. And as you see now, nobody talks about the suffering of the Syrian people."
General Salim Idris says Syrian government forces are already secretly moving chemical weapons to Lebanon and Iraq, to evade UN inspection. He says rebel fighters will view the deal as a significant blow to their campaign to remove President Assad from power. But he says they would cooperate to facilitate the work of any international inspectors on the ground.
The Iraqi government has rejected General Idris’s claim that chemical weapons are being moved to Iraq. A media assistant to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called it cheap propaganda.
