BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States and Russia are "coming to agreement" on the size of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles in their Geneva talks and reaching a "pivotal point," according to a US official.

US Secretary of State John Kerry opened talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Thursday night. Their discussion centers on a Russian proposal under which Syria would sign international treaties banning chemical weapons and hand over its stocks for destruction.

The meeting, originally scheduled for two days will now continue into Saturday. Both nations have vowed to renew efforts to negotiate a peaceful end to the Syrian civil war. Syria became a full member of the global anti-chemical weapons treaty on Thursday according to its envoy to the UN.
