BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Syria says it has accepted Russia's proposal to place its chemical weapons under international control.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Tuesday that his government quickly agreed to the Russian initiative, adding that Syria did so to "uproot US aggression." Russia is now working with Syria to prepare a detailed plan of action, which Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov assures will be presented soon.
Lavrov says that Russia will then finalize the plan together with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. US President Barack Obama said Monday the Russian proposal could "potentially be a significant breakthrough," but remained skeptical that Syria would follow through.
