Explore Africa: Go Down art zone

Go Down was once an abandoned factory. It eventually became an art zone just like 798 in Beijing, China. Artists are encouraged to show their potential here to make the area a part of the art and culture of East Africa.[Photo provided to China Daily]

Most people have visited the 798 art district in Beijing. The Go Down art zone is similar in Kenya. Many Kenyan artists have worked here at some point in their careers. The zone relies primarily on social donations. Artists work and live at the lowest costs possible.

The buildings are run down and broken, but art can make broken things beautiful. Even bricks along the corner seem artistic.[Photo provided to China Daily]

The painting of two hens is a work by Florench (L). She studied zoology in college. Her mother raises chickens, so hens and roosters can be seen in most of her paintings.[Photo provided to China Daily]
