BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The White House says President Barack Obama has spoken to French President Francois Hollande, and that both leaders agreed the world must send a strong message to the Syrian government that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable.
Obama informed Hollande in the call that he would seek congressional approval for US military action. A source close to Hollande said the French President has reaffirmed to Obama his will to sanction Syria.
France, like the US, holds the Syrian government responsible for the alleged chemical attack on August 21st near Damascus. A French presidential official says that France will wait for discussions by US lawmakers and the French parliament before making a decision on military intervention.
Meanwhile, France’s main opposition leader has warned of the dangers of military action against Syria. Jean Francois Cope said that political leaders should wait for conclusions from UN weapons inspectors.
