BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Colombia’s FARC rebels have returned to the negotiating table with the Colombian government in Havana, just days after calling off talks.
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC had announced a temporary freeze on Friday after President Juan Manuel Santos refused to agree to a constitutional assembly if a peace pact is agreed.
Ivan Marquez, lead negotiator for the FARC said on Monday that its members will continue to negotiate with the government because of their "commitment to looking for peace by all means."
The FARC have repeatedly called for a constitutional assembly, seeing it as a mechanism that would exonerate and constitutionally guarantee the rebels from having to go to prison for crimes committed during the war. But President Santos insists that it’s not on the cards and proposed a public referendum instead.
