BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- South Korea and the U.S. will launch their annual two-week joint war exercise. The computer-aided Ulchi Freedom Guardian will kick off on Monday for a 12-day run.
About 50 thousand South Korean forces and 30 thousand US servicemen will take part in the exercise. The Combined Forces Command said the drills are intended to examine the forces’ ability to ensure security on the Korean Peninsula and maintain the joint defense capacities between the two allies.
Along with the war exercise, the South Korean government will also hold a separate four-day emergency exercise from Monday. It will involve administrative bodies and public employees nationwide.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency says the exercise is designed to examine the government’s readiness for dealing with potential terrorist attacks and military provocations.
