BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhuanet) -- A UN team will examine the case of the intercepted ship by Panama as it carried weapons from Cuba. The UN Security Council Sanctions Committee will handle the case.
An eight-member panel of experts appointed by Secretary General monitors the UN sanctions imposed on the DPRK. The experts are mandated to "gather, examine and analyze information from states, relevant UN bodies and other interested parties" on allegations of sanctions violations and report back to the Security Council’s Sanctions Committee.
After seizing the container ship, Panama requested the UN to consider if the arms shipment constituted a violation of UN sanctions.
A UN arms embargo on the DPRK covers all exports by Pyongyang and most imports, with the exception of small arms and light weapons and related material. But in order to export small arms to Pyongyang, states must notify the UN Security Council’s DPRK sanctions committee in advance.
