BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 18 people were killed and 39 injured in a stampede triggered by fighting among fans after a boxing match on Sunday in the remote Indonesian province of Papua.

The riot was sparked by a dispute over scoring for the match, prompting some 1,500 spectators to try to flee the stadium. Military and personnel were present in the stadium but the situation got out of control.

The panicked crowd frantically tried to escape from the riot, trampling on those who fell around the door. Most of the dead were women.
