BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The interim President Adly Mansour’s office has backtracked on a decision to appoint pro-reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei as prime minister. The ultraconservative Salafi al-Nour party had objected to the appointment.
Whoever takes the job of interim prime minister will have sweeping powers to govern, while the president is expected to be a largely symbolic post.
Meanwhile, opponents and supporters of the deposed president Mohamad called for mass rallies and protests, renewing fears of another round of street violence.
The calls for competing rallies come two days after clashes between the rival camps left at least 36 people dead and more than a thousand wounded.
