Malaysia's ruling coalition hangs on to power
(Xinhua)   2013-05-06 10:18:33

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Malaysia’s ruling National Front coalition has been announced the winner of Sunday’s general election. With most results confirmed, Prime Minister Najib Razak’s National Front coalition has captured 133 of 222 parliamentary seats, while opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s three-party alliance has 77 seats.

Hailing another victory. Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak denied allegations of fraud and called on the opposition to accept defeat. Najib Razak said, "We practice open democracy, who says we don’t practice it here. We are faced with issues that are twisted by the opposition. There are issues that are half truths and there are issues that are not true at all, for example that we plan to bring Bangladeshis into the country to vote in this election."

It is the National Front’s 13th consecutive victory in general elections since independence from Britain in 1957.

However, it faced its most unified challenge ever from an opposition that says election was fraudulent. Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysian Opposition Leader, said, "I don’t think it is fair to expect me to form a conclusion, or make a decision, based primarily on an election that we consider rather fraudulent, and in fact the election commission has failed its task."

Anwar says "irregularities" cost his alliance numerous seats with narrow margins. And thousands of Malaysian opposition supporters replaced their profile photos with black boxes in a coordinated sign of dismay.

But, others saw the National Front as the path of stability. They said the coalition’s affirmative-action policies have brought great benefit to the majority, often poor Malay population. Opposition critics allege that these policies have been abused to benefit mainly well-connected Malays, and that all underprivileged Malaysians should get help regardless of race.
