BEIJING, March. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- There’s more political unrest in Egypt and this time, it’s coming from the nation’s police force.
Thousands of officers and low-ranking policemen have broken ranks, staging protests and waging strikes against what they say is the politicisation of the force by President Mohammed Morsi’s government.
The ruling Muslim Brotherhood denies the accusations. In response to the strike, an Islamist group in Egypt’s Assiut region has formed special security forces, due to the lack of police. Police in the region have now returned to work.
The move to set up private security groups has spread fears of potential Islamist vigilantes, taking the law into their own hands.
