Tui Village, the world's highest village

A flock of sheep crosses Poom Yumco lake, which in winter completely freezes over. In order to overcome this withered season when the ground sees no grass, the villagers drive their sheep to the island in the centre of the lake to enjoy one month of grass. After one month, before the snow and ice melt, the villagers cross the frozen lake once again to drive the sheep back to the town. This tradition has been in place for thousands of years already. Tui Village, the world's highest administrated village at an average elevation of 5,070 meters, is located in Dalong Town of the Lhoka Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region, over 300 kilometers from Lhasa. The grasslands cannot meet the needs of the breeding sheep in winter; however, the mid-lake island still has plenty of grass during the harsh and bare cold. This winter, the sheep were driven onto the island on December 15 on the Tibetan calendar, and returned to the village on January 20 or February 28 on the Gregorian calendar.
