BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhuanet) -- A leader of the Free Syrian Army has warned that the conflict in Syria could last much longer if the international community does not supply the opposition with weapons.

Salim Idriss, Commander in Chief of Free Syrian Army, said,

"The government still has military capabilities that are quite good and is continually receiving support from Russia and from Iran. If our Free Syrian Army does not receive arms and munitions then the conflict could drag on. How much longer? God only knows."

The commander also called for an end to the arms embargo on Syria. He says the failure to do so would worsen the country’s humanitarian situation. His warning comes just after the UN High Commissioner for Refugees announced that the number of Syrian refugees had passed the one-million mark. Meanwhile, Britain has said it will increase aid to opposition forces, including armoured vehicles and body armor to rebel fighters. Britain’s Foreign Secretary, William Hague, says the UK and the European Union must both be ready to take further steps if no political solution to the Syrian crisis is found.
