Deputy PM leads Kenya election
(Xinhua)   2013-03-06 10:48:22

BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhuanet) -- About a third of the ballots have been counted in Kenya’s presidential election, and early results show Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta in the lead.

The chairman of Kenya’s electoral commission, Isaak Hassan said on Tuesday that results from 10,000 polling stations are in, but officials await results from 23,000 more stations. If no one wins more than 50 percent of the vote, there will be a run-off on April 11th.

Kenyatta is due to face trial at the International Criminal Court next month. The trial stems from the widespread bloodshed following the disputed 2007 election, when ethnic and political violence killed more than 1,000 people amid claims that the polls had been rigged.

Besides the president, Kenyans are also choosing members of parliament and senators, county governors and members of 47 county assemblies.
