BEIJING, March. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, has wrapped up his trip to Cairo with an appeal for unity and reform. It comes after a meeting with Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi on Sunday.Kerry called on Egypt’s divided factions to reach consensus, in order to pave the way for economic recovery. Kerry also met with opposition politicians and the country’s foreign minister, Kamel Amr.
He told all political groups that agreement on economic reforms was essential, in order to seal a much-needed 4.8 billion US dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund. But he also acknowledged the difficulties in overcoming deep political and social divisions.
Egypt remains deeply divided between Morsi’s mainly Islamist allies and a wide-ranging opposition that accuses the president of failing to address the country’s economic needs and political concerns.
John Kerry will now fly to Saudi Arabia, the seventh embarkment of his 9 nation tour of Europe and the middle east.
