BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Clashes between rival gangs have continued in the Guinean seaside capital, Conakry, as ethnic tensions worsened ahead of elections.

The long-delayed legislative vote, tentatively set for May, is needed to complete a transition to civilian rule after a 2008 military coup. But preparations for the poll have been hampered by opposition claims that the election has been rigged by the administration of President Alpha Conde.

The opposition coalition has called for widespread protests in Conakry. Witnesses say rival gangs are fighting in the streets with knives and truncheons. Security forces in full anti-riot gear have been deployed across the city. The fighting followed two days of anti-government protests. One civilian has been killed and scores of protesters and police have been injured.
