BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- An early morning shooting spree in Orange County, California has left four people dead, including the shooter, and several more injured.

Police first responded to a shooting in Ladera Ranch in south Orange County. Police there found a female victim shot dead. The suspect fled the scene and headed to the nearby city of Tustin.

There were reports of several gunshots fired on the freeway. Police believe the suspect opened fire while driving or stepped out of his car to fire rounds at passing motorists. One of the shootings was at an off-ramp to Freeway 55 in Tustin and resulted in one death. The shooting continued just blocks away, leaving a third person dead and one more wounded. Another shooting at a nearby freeway on-ramp left one more victim wounded.

Police finally caught up to the gunman as he was driving a stolen vehicle. But he shot himself as authorities closed in. The motive for the shootings is still unclear. It is also unclear if the victims knew each other or the shooter.
