Police play down burglar claim in Pistorius shooting
(Xinhua)   2013-02-15 11:00:09

BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- South African police have charged Paralympic superstar Oscar Pistorius with the Valentine’s Day murder of his glamorous model girlfriend. They’ve poured cold water on media reports that she had been mistaken for an intruder. And a police spokeswoman confirmed there had been allegations of domestic violence.

Denise Beukes, spokesperson of South Africa Police Service, said, “I can confirm that there have previously been incidents at the home of Oscar Pistorius." "There are witnesses and they have been interviewed this morning. We are talking about neighbours and people who heard things that happened earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place."

The spokesperson said there was no sign of forced entry at Pistorius’s home. South Africa’s Prosecuting Authority says Pistorius will appear in court in the capital Pretoria on Friday. His court hearing has been postponed to give forensic investigators time to carry out their work.

The victim, model Reeva Steenkamp, was shot four times inside the athlete’s home. Police say the suspect made a request to be brought to court immediately. Pistorius is undergoing blood alcohol and forensic tests.

Pistorius is known as the Blade Runner because of his carbon fibre prosthetic blades. He was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics. He reached the 400 meter semi-finals at the London 2012 Games.
