BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Globally renowned pianist Lang Lang is now a Chevalier after France awarded him the Order of Arts and Letters medal in Cannes.
France’s Minister of Culture, Aurelie Filippetti, made the presentation in recognition of Lang Lang’s significant contribution to French culture and the development of classical music.
Filippetti said, "Lang Lang is one of the best pianists in the world. He has presented several concerts in France and they were very well received. And also, he has influenced many young people across the world. I think he deserves this honor."
While receiving the medal, Lang Lang noted that Chinese and French culture have influenced each other for centuries. And he said he was glad to be able to make a contribution to the cultural exchange between the two countries.
Lang said, "I’m very honored to receive this medal. I hope that more and more Chinese elements can be seen in the works of French artists."
Since its establishment in 1957, France’s Order of Arts and Letters has been recognizing luminaries for their contributions to the arts and literature. It has previously gone to artists such as T.S. Eliot, Bob Dylan and George Clooney.
And now, it’s Lang Lang’s turn. He’s not only a leading pianist in China, but also a worldwide sensation. The 30-year-old has conquered the classical world with his dazzling technique and charisma. He has given sold-out recitals and concerts in many major cities across the globe. And he was the first Chinese pianist to perform with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and top American orchestras.
Lang Lang has also done much to encourage children and young musicians to take an interest in classical music, especially through the international foundation he launched in New York in 2008.
