Russia reaffirms support for Palestinian UN bid

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- has reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian bid to upgrade its status to observer state at the . The move has infuriated because Palestinians want to become a non-member state based on 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital.

During his official visit to Jordan, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the Palestinian ambassador’s residence in Amman. The meeting focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and Russia’s role in the region. Lavrov said Russia recognised the state of when it was pronounced in 1988 and Russia has a Palestinian embassy in Moscow.

If passed, the Palestinian bid to would grant them access to bodies such as the International Criminal Court, where they could file complaints against Israel. The bid to the UN will be submitted to a vote this month and is expected to win support despite Israeli and US objections.
