BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- China’s Ambassador to Japan has given a speech in Tokyo, calling on Japan to face reality and correct mistakes over its handling of the Diaoyu Islands issue.

Speaking at an International symposium on Sino-Japan relations, Cheng Yonghua said ties between the two countries have reached an unprecedented and critical situation, due to Japan’s illegal purchase of the islands.

Cheng said Japan should make a detailed appraisal of the dispute, and show willingness to solve the problem. He called on Japan to take steps to promote bilateral ties, and bring relations back on track, adding that solving the issue is entirely Japan’s responsibility.

Scholars from both countries are attending the seminar, to discuss current political, diplomatic, economic and social ties. They’re hoping to find a potential solution to the territorial dispute.
