为推进船舶的蒸汽动力机械供应蒸汽的锅炉。船用锅炉与陆用锅炉不同之处是，对外形、尺寸和重量有严格的限制。例如，在军舰上宁可牺牲锅炉的热效率而不设置空气预热器,甚至也不设置省煤器。在结构上,锅炉应能适应船舶摇摆、倾侧和冲击等航行条件。船用锅炉要有一定的汽、水贮存容积，以适应蒸汽动力机械频繁和大幅度改变负荷的需要。为了满足轻小和机动性高的要求,普遍燃用重油。锅炉蒸发量为10～200吨/时,蒸汽参数略低于相应蒸发量的电站锅炉。早期船用锅炉都是用铁板或铜板铆接而成,蒸汽压力不超过0.2兆帕。1850年后火管锅炉得到发展。20世纪20年代以前，火管式的苏格兰锅炉（图1）在大小商船和一般军舰上占主要地位。直水管锅炉,如雅洛锅炉（图2），从20世纪初就已开始应用于轻型军舰。但由于蒸汽机的凝结水中含有较多油脂，当时的锅炉水处理技术又落后，在商船上应用不多。从20年代起，由于汽轮机在船上逐步推广,又解决了凝结水中的油脂问题,直水管锅炉逐渐取代了火管锅炉。以后又由于水处理技术的进一步提高,船用锅炉都采用弯水管锅炉（图3）。为了能适应船舶的频繁和大幅度的负荷变动，各种船用弯水管锅炉大多是锅筒式自然循环锅炉，很少用辅助循环锅炉，更不采用直流锅炉。
