可分为真性胆碱酯酶和假性胆碱酯酶。前者也称乙酰胆碱酯酶,主要存在于神经元内,特别是胆碱能神经元内,神经肌肉接头处以及红细胞和肌组织中,对于生理浓度乙酰胆碱的作用最强,一般所称的胆碱酯酶即指此种。真性胆碱酯酶是一种最有效的酶,在一分钟内一个酶分子可分解63×155分子乙酰胆碱。假性胆碱酯酶存在于神经胶质细胞、血浆和肝脏中,其生理功能尚不清楚。
