从甘肃兰州经河西走廊到新疆。1962年通车到乌鲁木齐,长1903千米。1990年修至阿拉山口,增至2363千米,并与哈萨克斯坦铁路接轨。乌鲁木齐至阿拉山口段曾称“北疆铁路”。兰州至乌鲁木齐段已建为复线。武威以东已电气化。是中国横贯东西的大动脉之一,第二亚欧大陆桥的组成环节。
