《诗经》中的《桑中》、《隰桑》等写桑林里男女情爱的故事，源于远古的桑林崇拜，而《陌上桑》中诱惑与拒绝的故事又源于“桑间濮上”之音，先秦时代能在桑林里坦然幽会的女性才是罗敷形象的原型。

桑林
性社会学名。是中国语言中表示淫 秽之所的隐语。古代以桑林作为社木，桑林又是男女野合的场所。传说大禹就曾与涂山女交媾于桑林之中。《天问》曾就此发问说：“禹之力献功，降省下土方。焉得彼涂山女，而通之于台桑?”台桑即桑台，亦即桑林。古风俗允许男女私通的场所。
