法律对作品的版权认可与保护的期限。在保护期内，版权所有者享有法律赋予的各项权利。版权的人身权利与作者不可分离，因而通常没有时间限制，永久受到保护。但有的国家规定，版权人身权利的保护期仅为作者有生之年，作者死后，权利便终止。版权中的财产权利均有具体规定的保护期限，版权保护期一般是就版权财产权利而言。保护期届满，版权失效，作品进入公有领域,任何人得自由使用之。版权作为一种无形财产权,其行使没有时间限制，不仅有悖于版权保护作者本人权益的主旨，也不利于作品更迅速广泛地传播，不利于文化的积累和发展，因此有必要对版权的行使规定一定的期限。这是对版权的一种限制。现代版权立法从其最早的《安妮女王法令》(1709)开始，便有关于保护期限的规定。版权保护期一般以作者有生之年加死后若干年计算。多数国家规定在作者死后保护50年;短则不少于25年,长则有达70、80甚至90余年者。亦有的国家规定版权保护期仅为作者有生之年;作者去世后,版权便终止。法人作品或遗作的版权保护期限，一般以作品出版之日起若干年计算。有些作品，如实用美术作品、摄影作品和录音作品等，保护期一般要短于其他作品。
