承载式车身的汽车没有刚性车架，只是加强了车头、侧围、车尾、底板等部位，发动机、前后悬架、传动系统的一部分等总成部件装配在车身上设计要求的位置，车身负载通过悬架装置传给车轮。承载式车身除了其固有的乘载功能外，还要直接承受各种负荷力的作用。承载式车身不论在安全性还是在稳定性方面都有很大的提高，它具有质量小、高度低，装配容易等优点，大部分轿车采用这种车身结构。
