从青海西宁到西藏拉萨。第一期工程从西宁到格尔木,长814千米(实际上已铺轨到格尔木前方31千米处的南山口),1979年筑成,1984年正式通车。大部分路段海拔3000米以上,为中国目前海拔最高的铁路。对开发西北地区起重要作用。第二期工程通往拉萨,尚未兴建。
