分子式C8H8O2,分子量136.14。亦称苯醋酸。白色粉末。熔点为76.5℃、沸点265.5℃。密度(20/4℃)1.228g/cm3,微溶于冷水,易溶于热水,溶于乙醇、乙醚、也溶于碳酸钠和氨溶液。可被氧化成苯甲酸,也可被二氧化锰和稀硫酸氧化成苯甲醛、甲酸及二氧化碳。可发生取代反应,如硝化和卤化等。可用于配制香料,在青霉素的发酵液中加入苯乙酸,可提高青霉素G的产率。可由氯化苄与氰化钾反应得到苯乙腈,再用氢氧化钠溶液水解制得。
