咸通中，进士皮日休进书两通，其一请以《孟子》为学科，其略云：「臣闻圣人之道，不过乎经﹔经之降者，不过乎史﹔史之降者，不过乎子﹔子不异道者，《孟子》也。舍是而诸子者，必斥乎经史，为圣人之贼也。」云云。文多不载。请废庄、列之书，以《孟子》为主。有能通其义者，其科选请同明经也。其二请以韩文公愈配飨太学，其略曰：「臣闻圣人之道，不过乎求用。用於生前，则一时可知也﹔用於死後，则万世可知也。」云云。又云：「孟子、荀卿翼辅孔道，以至於文中子。文中子之道旷矣，其几於室授者，唯韩愈焉。蹴及杨、墨，蹂践释、老，故得孔道，炳然如日星焉。吾唐以来，一人而已。苟不得在二十一贤之数列，则典礼未为备也。」
日休先字逸少，後字袭美，襄阳竟陵人也。业文，隐鹿门山，号醉吟先生，窃比大圣。榜未及第，礼部侍郎郑愚以其貌不扬，戏之曰：「子之才学甚富，如一目何？」休对曰：「侍郎不可以一目废二目。」谓不以人废言也。举子咸推伏之。官至国子博士。寓苏州，与陆龟蒙为文友。著《文薮》十卷、《皮子》三卷，人多传之。黄寇中遇害，其子为钱尚父吴越相。
