      中国战国时孟子的哲学术语,指仁、义、礼、智四种道德观念的开端、萌芽。亦称善端,是孟子论证人性本善的重要概念。《孟子·公孙丑上》说:"恻隐之心,仁之端也;羞恶之心,义之端也;辞让之心,礼之端也;是非之心,智之端也。"孟子认为,这四端与生俱为,如同人有四肢一样,是天赋的。人之所以异于禽兽,就在于有这四端。有的人能扩充四端,努力培养;有的人则自暴自弃,不去充分发挥本性,因而形成了人品的高下善恶。但是,即使人品极端恶劣的人,他所固有的四端也不曾泯灭,只是隐而不显。孟子论述人性,重视了人的社会性,但把"四端"说成是与生俱来的天赋德性,则属唯心主义先验论。
  
  宋代理学家朱熹发展了孟子的这一思想,提出性情、体用之说,认为四端是情,仁、义、礼、智是性。性是心之未发,情是心之已发,"未发则具仁、义、礼、智、信之性以为之体,已发则有恻隐、羞恶、恭敬、是非、诚实之情以为之用"。有体而后有用,情是性的表现,而不是性。但由情可以知性之有,这叫"因用以著其本体"。朱熹的发挥,使儒家人性学说更加完备了。
