山西省动植物及生态环境完整的生物生态系统综合保护区。位于北纬38°35′40″～38°45′,东经111°50′～112°5′30″。在山西省五寨县境内1980年建立自然保护区。保护动物以褐马鸡为主，植物为华北落叶松、云杉次生林等各类植物群系。面积2.15万公顷，其中核心区0.56万公顷。华北落叶松林、云杉(主要是青杄)林是山西省天然分布最多,生长较好的森林,在华北地区和全国均具典型作用。林区内食草、食肉动物聚集，可保持生态平衡。芦芽山以太古界片麻状花岗岩为主，上层部分有石灰岩。全区西北高、东南低。西有荷叶坪、北有芦芽山、黄草梁等著名山峰。区内地形复杂，沟壑纵横，高差1400多米。较大的沟有梅洞沟、圪洞沟、高崖底沟。自下而上。植被分为：① 海拔1300～1600米是灌丛草原及农垦带。②1600～1800米是常绿针叶林及针阔叶混交林带。③1800～2600米是针叶林带。④2600米以上为亚高山灌丛和亚高山草甸。
