【基本分析历史相似假设】从预测趋势的角度而言，历史相似假设就是假设事物的发展因素也决定着事物未来的发展，其条件是不变的或变化不大。也就是说，假定根据过去资料建立的趋势外推模型能适合未来，能代表未来趋势变化的情况，即未来和过去的规律一样。或者是说，历史是相似的甚至历史会重演。技术分析学派认为，运用从证券市场交易量和交易价格的历史资料中概括出的规律以及反映这些规律的各种技术分析工具，可以分析已经发生的证券交易量和交易价格，并由此预测交易量和交易价格的未来走势。为此，技术分析就有了这样的一种假设，即由历史资料所概括出来的规律已经包含了未来证券市场的一切变动趋势，已经发生的证券交易量和交易价格所反映的一切信息与未来发生的一切信息相同，故可以预测未来。
