道德发展过程中形成的不同历史形态，伦理学考察道德发展的一个重要内容。马克思主义认为，道德作为社会意识形式之一，虽然有其自身相对独立发展的历史，但归根结柢是同社会物质生活条件的变化相适应的。处于不同社会历史条件下的道德，无论在社会内容、表现形式和调节功能等方面，都会打上明显的时代印记。根据这种认识，马克思主义伦理学把迄今为止的道德，从总体上划分为原始公有制社会的部落 -氏族道德（见原始社会道德）、私有制社会的阶级道德和公有制社会的共产主义道德。相应于私有制社会的不同历史形态，阶级道德又可以划分为奴隶制社会的奴隶主阶级道德和奴隶阶级道德（见奴隶社会道德）、封建制社会的地主阶级道德和农民阶级道德（见封建社会道德）、资本主义社会的资产阶级道德和无产阶级道德。道德历史类型的这种划分，不仅显示出道德发展过程所具有的客观必然性，而且也显示出每种类型都是道德发展总过程的环节或阶段。
