包头市境内最大的黄河支流。大青山与乌拉山的天然分界。古称石门水。其上游俗称北齐沟。南北流向。发源于固阳县,流经包头市区,在哈林格尔乡注入黄河。全长143公里,有支流23条,流域面积2716平方公里。属季节性河流,山洪多发生于7 8月,历史最大洪峰7050立方米/秒(1856年),下游建有昆都仑水库。昆都仑沟河谷平坦,可行车马,是横穿阴山最理想的交通坦途。
