The stone crypt burial system seems to have begun in the Song Dynasty with the Yonghou Mausoleum of Emperor Yingzong built in 1067,and extant documents reveal that the stone outer coffin was the common form used at that time.
宋代石藏葬制的发端一般被认为是治平四年(1067)英宗永厚陵,仔细查考文献可知,此时实以石椁作为变通形式。

释石藏。姓吕。汉东人也。年邻小学露成人之度。跪告堂亲愿为佛子。遂志入开元寺削染受戒。克愿礼嵩山寂禅师豁悟禅法。至中山大像峰间石室。孤坐冥寂数夏安然。同好者望风而至。蔚成丛众。陶化博陵人咸欣戴。会州帅李公卓。翘仰之切。命入城住贵亲玄论。谢云。野性难拘。不闲礼法。恐玷威陵。卓躬登山访问。款密交谈深开昏昧。遂奏院题额曰定真焉。藏预白众诀别。明日坐亡。春秋八十三。贞元十六年正月入塔。立碑颂德云。
