将其他文学体裁的作品，如小说、戏剧、叙事诗等，根据其主要的人物形象、故事情节和思想内容，充分运用电影的表现手段，经过再创造，使之成为适合于拍摄的电影文学剧本。改编既是把一种文学体裁的作品转换为电影文学剧本，就必然对原作有所增删与改动。而改动的幅度、情节各异,大致上可分为3种类型：一是基本上忠实于原著，如影片《祝福》、《青春之歌》等。二是接近于原著，即原著的主题思想不变，主要人物和事件基本保留，如《骆驼祥子》、《复活》等。三是改动较大，如根据P.梅里美同名小说改编的影片《塔曼果》，对原作的主题与人物的精神面貌作了相应的改变。改编历来是电影剧本的一个重要来源,既占有相当的比例,也不乏脍炙人口的佳作。有的名著已先后改编过多次，如V.雨果的《悲惨世界》等。
