裕固族人口约10000人（1982）,近百分之九十聚居在甘肃省肃南裕固族自治县，其余散居在甘肃酒泉黄泥堡地区。语言分属阿尔泰语系突厥语族和蒙古语族，无文字，通用汉文。其民间文学有神话、传说、故事、民歌、叙事诗、格言、谚语等。目前已收集、整理发表的裕固族古老的神话、传说、故事有《莫拉》、《神箭手射雁》、《三头妖与勇敢的青年》,现代民间传说有《洋人盗宝》、《红女人》、《屈大哥走延安》等。
裕固族的民歌有习俗歌、生活歌、劳动歌、情歌等，习俗歌中的《戴头面歌》是裕固族姑娘14岁时，戴头面，行成年礼时所唱的歌;《婚礼曲》是婚礼仪式歌,内容固定不变。劳动歌中的《割草歌》、《牧羊调》等，曲调优美。裕固族的民歌吸收汉族的小调、藏族的山歌、回族等的"花儿"和蒙古族的酒曲等各种形式，增强了艺术表现力。
在民歌基础上形成的叙事长诗《黄黛琛》和《萨娜玛可》等是贫苦牧民控诉和反抗封建婚姻制度的代表作品。
