印度古代文学中分章节的长篇叙事诗。本来是指较早的几部作品如迦梨陀娑的《罗怙世系》和《鸠摩罗出世》、婆罗维的《野人和阿周那》、摩伽的《童护的伏诛》等，实际上包括了一些著名的长篇叙事诗。这类诗的内容多取材于史诗传说，注重词藻和描写，在梵文文学中的传统地位很高，但除迦梨陀娑外，其余作者笔下往往形式主义严重。如婆罗维和摩伽的诗中就有不同读法的"回文诗"和玩弄语言文字游戏的诗节。婆罗维和摩伽大约是公元 7世纪人，另外几部大诗的作者大约也是 7世纪和以后的人。
